This image may not mean anything to folks who didn’t grow up on the East Coast. It’s my take on a classic coffee cup design called the Anthora that I’ve become kind of obsessed with. As a teen in New Jersey, often visiting New York, this cup was a staple of diners and coffee shops there. Even though I adore the PNW that I transplanted to in 2002, to this day I really pine for the comforting foods I grew up with that... either don’t exist here or just really aren’t the same. So to me this cup represents a lot of nostalgia. Jewish delis and bagels and eggplant parm subs. Pizza that’s not artisanal - it’s greasy af and freaking goood. Going to 24-hour-neon-and-chrome diners with my friends at 3am after dancing at clubs in the city. (It also represents my longing for coffee, which my bod can no longer process). Anyway, once in a while in a 70s or 80s period show, a cop will be sipping one of these on a stake-out in a car and I’ll point the the TV and yell and no one will know what I’m talking about.
